Per Eklund has signed a UFC contract spanning 4 fights/18 months. His first fight will take place in Newcastle, England on the 28th of January against Sam Stout. The UFC 155lb bracket is stacked with talent such as BJ Penn, Tyson Griffin, Clay Guida and Roger Huerta. Asgard managed to get an interview with the first Swedish fighter in the UFC.
Q: How are you going to prepare for your first UFC fight?
I box with Stephan Fernstrom and I will spar with Paulo Roberto. I mainly do MMA and Wrestling sparring with teammates Reza Madadi and Diego Gonzalez
Q: Why do you think you are the first Swede to sign a contract with the UFC?
Your European ranking, your managers or due to your training over at Team Quest?
Because I got good record and won a few fights in Bodog as well as Team Quest helping me out.
Q: You’ve visited quite a few gyms around the world, any comments?
I started Muay Thai at Kampsportskolan and did about 6 months training or so. After that I moved on to Pancrase Stockholm. I’ve also trained at places such as Nova Uniao Brazil, Ruas VT Gym, Brian Talarecks in Denmark, ATT in Florida, Wasa Kampsport, VBC, Team Quest in California and Hilti NHB in Stockholm.
Q: You recently fought and won your first pro-boxing bout. Is this something you want to continue doing?
Yes, I want to keep training. But due to contractual obligations with the UFC I can’t really fight professionally elsewhere.
Q: What does your typical day look like?
I wake up make breakfast for my son and me then I drop him off at kindergarten after that I go to work or train in the morning, then I either train in the afternoon or I pick up my son from kindergarten, then usually spend time and take care of my son the rest of the day.
Q: Who would you like to fight in UFC ?
It doesn’t matter. I train hard and I’ll fight anyone. But of course I would like to fight the best fighters they have.
Q: Will you stay in Sweden or move to USA?
I’ll stay in Sweden, I’d like to thank my manager Manos Terzitane for my UFC contract he has helped since January this year, and he arranged my fights in Strike and Submit in Newcastle. He works hard to help me out. I would also like to thank Marko Leisten who also helped me this year with my fights in Bodog and my fight against Tatsuja Kawariji.
